This project came about during my time at Lund University, School of Industrial Design as a collaboration between the school, design firm IDEO and IKEA of Sweden. The name HACKA (Swedish slang for “to hack”) was inspired by the growing trend of hacking physical products for personalisation, adapting to functional needs and artistic expression. Our main idea was for IKEA to embrace this trend rather than seeing it as a threat.
The result was a modular system consisting of metal fittings and wooden beams with the idea of encouraging people to create their own personalised kitchens. The concept was developed further together with IKEA for the exhibition #IKEAtemporary at the 2014 Milan Furniture Fair and was later part of the IKEA showroom in Älmhult, Sweden.

The HACKA system consists of standard wooden beams that are connected using metal fittings. Together they serve as a framework to which kitchen appliances, cabinets and surfaces can be added. People are encouraged to cut beams to custom sizes and add third party objects in order to create their fully personalised kitchens. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of people and needs.
